"Miho no Matsubara(三保松原)" is located in Shimizu Ward, the central area of Shizuoka.
Shimizu is famous as a port town.
Miho no Matsubara is a scenic spot with more than 30,000 pine trees along a 7 km coastline.
It is one of the three most beautiful pine groves in Japan, and the view of Mt. Fuji from the beach is impressive.
The legend of "Hagoromo no Matsu" (the pine tree of the robe of feathers), which was written about in the Manyoshu (the oldest anthology of Japanese poetry) and on which a celestial maiden hung her robe of feathers.
In Japan, the pine tree is an evergreen tree that is sacred even in winter and is considered to be a sacred tree inhabited by the gods.
The scenery of Miho no Matsubara, with its green pine forests, lapping white waves, blue ocean and Mt. Fuji, has been expressed in Ukiyoe by Hiroshige Utagawa and numerous paintings and waka poems.
